“Square Butte Cloudburst” – 15″ x 24″ Oil

Square Butte in Cascade County, Montana, about 22 miles due west of the city of Great Falls, is a prominent feature on the northern skyline. It is one of eleven buttes of the same name in Montana. This butte can be seen in the background setting of several paintings by cowboy artist Charles M. Russell.

This peaceful snow scene landscape painting depicts two mule deer that are backlit by the warm early morning light penetrating through the snow-covered trees of a winter forest. Available for purchase here.

Happy 2017!

2017 is off to a running start with two new paintings.

“Lake Isabelle Tranquility” is a 22″ x 28″ oil on canvas and is available here.

The rugged mountain peaks of the Indian Peaks Wilderness in Colorado form the setting for Lake Isabelle. My inspiration for this painting comes from the wonderful memories of family hikes to this remote destination at timberline to spend a day of fishing. If the fish weren’t biting I would lay on my back in the soft grassy meadow and watch the clouds form and move across the deep blue sky.

“Rise at River’s Bend” is a 18″ x 24″ oil on canvas and is available here.

Late afternoon sunlight casts rays of light and shadows across the river where mayflies are hatching and the trout are rising. The inspiration for this painting comes from many wonderful days of fly fishing on the Cache la Poudre River in northern Colorado. Fall is my favorite time with mountain foliage colors reflecting in the cool clear water. Look closely and see the telltale sign of trout rising to feed on the surface.
